🙏 Opening Prayer

Almighty and ever-living God,
you called Saint Lucy to be a light in the darkness of sin;
grant that, strengthened by her example and prayers,
we may always walk in the light of Christ your Son.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Reflection & CCC Links

🕯 1. The Zeal of the Saints

Elijah in Sirach is a vivid reminder of the prophetic call to speak truth and to kindle hearts aflame with love for God. His fire-like word challenges us not to be lukewarm in faith.
➡️ The Catechism notes how prophets witness to God’s justice and mercy, calling the people to conversion. Their courage and fidelity reflect the holiness God calls every Christian to live (see CCC 71, 72, 2047).

🙇 2. Turn Back to God (Psalm 80)

The psalm expresses deep longing for God’s presence and mercy. It echoes Advent themes: repentance, restoration, and hope. This plea for God’s face to shine upon us invites personal conversion and trust in His saving love.
➡️ The Catechism teaches that prayer is both an expression of faith and a call to conversion, especially during Advent (see CCC 2558–2565).

🔔 3. Fulfillment in Christ (Gospel)

Jesus reveals that John the Baptist is the Elijah who was to come, fulfilling the Word of God and leading the way for the Lord. In looking to John, we see our own call to prepare the path of the Lord in our hearts.
➡️ The Catechism highlights John the Baptist as the greatest born of women, whose mission was to prepare for Christ’s coming (see CCC 523–524).

💡 Application for Today

🌟 For Catholics

  • Examine your interior life: Like Elijah’s passion, let your faith be alive — not just routine. Ask: Where in my life do I need to rekindle zeal for God?

  • Advent preparation: We are in Advent. This reading season invites sincere repentance and readiness for Christ’s coming — in Christmas and at the end of time.

🌱 For Catechumens

  • Prepare your heart: Reflect on John the Baptist’s role and how he “prepared the way.” Meditation on Advent readings helps deepen your conversion and understanding of Christ’s coming.

  • Prayerful desire: Let Psalm 80 be your prayer today — Lord, let me turn fully towards you.

🙌 Closing Prayer

O God, who made Saint Lucy a bright light for your pilgrim Church,
grant through her intercession that we may follow Christ faithfully
and come safely to the light of everlasting life.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
