✣ Opening Prayer

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Come, Holy Spirit,
open our hearts to receive God’s Word with faith and joy.
May these readings strengthen our love for Christ and our service to others.
Amen.

📖 First Reading — 1 Samuel 3:1-10, 19-20

At a time when God’s word was rare, the young Samuel served in God’s house under Eli. One night the Lord called him repeatedly. Though Samuel did not yet recognize God’s voice, with Eli’s guidance he answered: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

Key thought: God still calls our name — and invites us to listen deeply with humility and obedience.
💡 Catechumen focus: Samuel’s openness models the disciple who hears God’s voice and follows.

(Lectionary: 307)

🎶 Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 40:2 and 5, 7-8, 8-9, 10

Response: Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.

The psalmist recounts being lifted from trouble and placing trust in God’s justice and mercy. He delights to do God’s will and proclaims God’s saving justice without fear.

Key theme: Trust and joyful obedience to God’s word.
💡 Catechumen focus: Embrace God’s call with both heart and deed.

(Lectionary: 307)

📖 Alleluia — John 10:27

My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

This verse reminds us that Christ calls and we are known by Him.

Gospel — Mark 1:29-39

After leaving the synagogue, Jesus heals Simon Peter’s mother-in-law and many others who were sick or possessed. Early the next morning, Jesus goes off to pray alone — and when the disciples find Him, He tells them: “Let us go on to the nearby villages, that I may preach there also. For this purpose I came.”

Key insight: Jesus ministers to needs — physical and spiritual — yet always in communion with the Father through prayer.
💡 Catechumen focus: Prayer fuels mission; service flows from listening to Christ.

(Lectionary: 307)

📖 Short Explanations & Practical Application

🕊 First Reading — God Calls the Young Samuel

  • Explanation: Samuel’s story shows how God’s call may come in unexpected silence. Discipleship begins with attentive listening — not just hearing sounds but being receptive to God’s presence.

  • Application: Spend time today in quiet, asking God to speak and help you respond with “Here am I.”

🎶 Psalm — Here Am I, Lord

  • Explanation: The psalmist’s trust in God becomes active obedience.

  • Application: Choose one concrete way today to do God’s will — whether in forgiveness, kindness, or prayer.

✝ Gospel — Jesus Heals and Prays

  • Explanation: Jesus’ actions show compassion, but He also gives priority to prayer. Mission follows from deep communion with God.

  • Application: Before acting today, take a moment in prayer — even a brief one — to center your heart on God’s purpose.

🙏 Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,
You call each of us by name and invite us to follow You.
Help us to listen with open hearts,
to do Your will with joy,
and to serve others with compassion.
Make us faithful disciples in daily life,
rooted in prayer and active in love.
Amen.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
