Following Jesus Even When It Is Difficult
Following Jesus is not always easy. Sometimes God's Word challenges us. Sometimes people may disagree with us. Sometimes God's plan is completely different from what we expected.
Today's readings remind us to stay close to God, trust His plan, and remain faithful even when following Him becomes difficult.
God's Word May Bring Rejection — Jeremiah 20:7–9
Jeremiah suffered because he proclaimed God's Word.
People did not want to hear what God was saying through him. Jeremiah was mocked and humiliated. He became so discouraged that he wanted to stop speaking about God.
But he couldn't.
God's Word was like a fire burning inside his heart.
We may experience something similar. When we speak about our faith or stand for what is right, not everyone will agree with us. Some people may even make fun of us.
But when we share God's truth, we must always do it with love, humility, and charity.
We are called to remain faithful to God, not to change His truth simply because people don't like hearing it.
Simple message: Speak God's truth with love, even when it is difficult.
My Soul Thirsts for God — Psalm 62(63):2–6, 8–9
Our souls naturally search for God.
Sometimes we run to God when we are hurt, worried, afraid, or desperately need His help. But God should not only be part of our lives during difficult times.
We should also seek Him when everything is going well.
God's love is greater than anything this world can offer. Praise Him, thank Him, and stay close to Him every day.
Simple message: Cling to God in both the good times and the bad times.
Don't Follow Everything the World Teaches — Romans 12:1–2
St. Paul tells us:
“Do not model yourselves on the behaviour of the world around you.”
This doesn't mean everything in the world is bad.
It means we should not follow attitudes, desires, or ways of living that pull us away from God.
Instead, we should offer ourselves to God and allow Him to transform us.
We cannot become holy through our own strength alone. We need God's grace.
When following Jesus becomes difficult, ask Him:
“Lord, give me the grace and strength to follow You.”
Simple message: Don't allow the world to shape your heart. Allow Christ to transform it.
Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus — Matthew 16:21–27
Jesus told His disciples that He would suffer, die, and rise again.
Peter couldn't accept this.
He wanted Jesus to avoid suffering. But Peter was thinking according to human understanding instead of God's plan.
Sometimes we do the same thing.
When God doesn't answer our prayers the way we expect, we may think He isn't listening. We become impatient and try to solve everything ourselves.
Later, we may realize that God's way was different from ours.
God sees the bigger picture. We don't.
Sometimes people may also discourage us from doing something good. They may genuinely believe they are helping us, but their advice may not necessarily be what God wants.
That is why we need prayer and discernment.
Jesus then tells us:
“If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Following Jesus doesn't mean life will always go our way.
There will be sacrifices, struggles, disappointments, and moments when our faith is tested.
Taking up our cross doesn't mean looking for suffering. It means remaining faithful to Jesus when following Him becomes difficult.
What Can We Learn?
Stay faithful to God's Word even when others reject it.
Speak the truth with love and humility.
Seek God during both good and difficult times.
Don't allow worldly thinking to pull you away from Christ.
Depend on God's grace instead of your own strength.
Trust God when His plan is different from yours.
Pray for discernment before following someone's advice.
Carry your cross and continue following Jesus.
Reflection Questions
Am I afraid to speak about my faith because of what others might think?
Do I seek God only when I have problems?
Is something in my life preventing me from growing closer to Jesus?
Am I depending on God's grace or only on my own strength?
When God doesn't answer me the way I expect, do I become impatient?
Do I trust that God sees things that I cannot see?
What cross am I struggling to carry right now?
Am I willing to follow Jesus even when following Him costs me something?
Final Reflection
Following Jesus was never promised to be easy.
Jeremiah experienced rejection. St. Paul tells us not to conform ourselves to the world. Jesus Himself tells us to take up our cross and follow Him.
There will be moments when God's way doesn't make sense to us.
But God sees what we cannot see.
Ask Him for the grace to remain faithful. Stay close to Him, trust Him, and keep following Jesus even when the road becomes difficult.
The Cross is difficult, but the Cross is not the end — it leads to the Resurrection.
