Hearing God’s Word and Living It Faithfully

The readings remind us that God calls each person to serve Him in different ways. They also help us understand why Mary is called the new Ark of the Covenant and why she is truly blessed. Through her example, we learn to hear God’s word, obey it and bring Jesus to others.

God Gives Us Different Responsibilities

In 1 Chronicles 15:3–4, 15–16 and 16:1–2, King David gathered the people to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. The Levites were chosen to carry the Ark according to God’s instructions. Other people were given the responsibility of singing and playing musical instruments.

This teaches us that God gives different gifts, vocations and responsibilities to His people. Not everyone is called to perform the same task, but everyone has something to offer.

We should pray and ask God to help us recognise how He wants us to serve. God may guide us through Scripture, prayer, our abilities, the circumstances of our lives and the teachings of the Church.

We should not compare our calling with someone else’s. A task may appear small to the world, but when it is performed faithfully and with love, it is valuable in God’s eyes.

Mary, the New Ark of the Covenant

The Ark of the Covenant was sacred because it represented God’s presence among His people. It carried the tablets of the Law, manna and the staff of Aaron.

Mary is called the new Ark of the Covenant because she carried Jesus Christ in her womb. Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, the true Bread from Heaven and our eternal High Priest.

The Catechism teaches:

“Mary, in whom the Lord himself has just made his dwelling, is the daughter of Zion in person, the Ark of the Covenant.”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2676

Mary did not keep Jesus to herself. She carried Him to Elizabeth and later presented Him to the world. We are also called to bring Jesus to others through our words, actions, kindness and way of life.

Worship Belongs to God Alone

Psalm 131(132) invites God’s people to enter His dwelling place and worship Him. It also celebrates God’s choice of Zion as the place where He would dwell among His people.

Worship belongs to God alone—the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Catholics do not worship Mary or the saints. We honour them because of what God accomplished in their lives, but adoration is given only to God.

The Catechism explains:

“Adoration is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a creature before his Creator.”

God desires to dwell among His people. He dwelt in a unique way within Mary when she carried Jesus. Through Baptism and the Holy Spirit, God also desires to live within us and make us holy.

Christ Has Conquered Death

In 1 Corinthians 15:54–57, Saint Paul proclaims:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

Sin and death do not have the final word. Through His death and Resurrection, Jesus defeated them and opened the way to eternal life.

This victory does not come from our own strength. It is a gift given to us through Jesus Christ. Therefore, we should give thanks to God and place our hope in Him.

The following verse, 1 Corinthians 15:58, teaches that our labour for the Lord is never wasted. However, this does not mean that serving God will always bring us money, comfort or success in this life.

Doing God’s work may involve sacrifice, rejection and suffering. Our greatest reward is knowing Christ, growing in holiness and one day sharing eternal life with Him.

The Catechism teaches:

“The way of perfection passes by way of the Cross. There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle.”
— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2015

We should continue doing good even when nobody notices or thanks us. God sees every faithful act performed with love.

Blessed Are Those Who Obey God

In Luke 11:27–28, a woman praised Jesus by praising His mother. Jesus answered:

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Jesus was not rejecting or dishonouring Mary. He was showing us the deeper reason why she is blessed.

Mary is blessed not only because she gave birth to Jesus, but also because she listened to God, believed His word and obeyed Him. At the Annunciation, she said:

“Let it be done to me according to your word.”
— Luke 1:38

Mary perfectly lived the teaching of Jesus. She heard God’s word and allowed it to guide her entire life.

Listening to God’s word is important, but listening alone is not enough. We must put it into practice. God’s word should influence how we speak, treat people, make decisions and respond to difficulties.

Bringing Jesus to Others

These readings teach us that God gives each person a purpose and different ways to serve Him. We may not always understand His plan, but we can ask Him for the grace to follow it faithfully.

Mary shows us how to accept God’s calling with humility and obedience. As the new Ark of the Covenant, she carried Jesus and brought Him to others.

We honour Mary because God chose her for a unique mission and because she faithfully obeyed Him. However, we worship God alone.

Through Jesus, sin and death have been defeated. Therefore, we should not become discouraged when our service goes unnoticed. Nothing done faithfully for the Lord is ever wasted.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving each of us different gifts and responsibilities. Help us to recognise Your will and serve You faithfully, even when our efforts are not noticed by others.

Teach us to worship You alone and to place our hope in the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death. Like Mary, help us to hear Your word, believe it and put it into practice. May our words and actions bring Jesus to everyone we meet.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
