Mary’s Assumption: A Sign of Christ’s Victory and Our Hope

The readings for the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary remind us that Jesus Christ has conquered Satan, sin and death. Mary’s Assumption gives us hope because it shows what God desires for all who remain faithful to Him: eternal life with Him in heaven.

The Woman Clothed with the Sun

In Apocalypse 11:19 and 12:1–6, 10, the Ark of the Covenant appears in heaven. Immediately afterward, a woman clothed with the sun appears.

The woman can represent Israel, the Church and Mary. She represents Israel because Jesus came from the people of Israel. She represents the Church because Satan continues to attack those who follow Christ. She also points to Mary because she is the Mother of Jesus and the new Ark of the Covenant.

The Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament carried signs of God’s presence. Mary carried Jesus Christ—God Himself—in her womb.

The dragon represents Satan. He tried to destroy Christ, and he continues to tempt and accuse God’s people. Satan may try to make us believe that we are too sinful or unworthy to return to God. However, we must not fall into despair.

We do need to recognise our sins and repent, but God is always ready to forgive those who sincerely return to Him. Christ has already won the decisive victory through His death and Resurrection.

The Catechism teaches:

“The victory over the ‘prince of this world’ was won once for all at the Hour when Jesus freely gave himself up to death.”

The Queen Standing at the King’s Right Hand

Psalm 44(45) describes a queen standing at the right hand of the king. Originally, this psalm celebrated a royal wedding. Christians also understand it as pointing to Christ the King and His bride, the Church.

In the celebration of the Assumption, the queen also reminds us of Mary. God brought her into heavenly glory, where she is honoured as Queen.

Mary is not equal to God, and Catholics do not worship her. Everything she received came from God’s grace. We honour Mary because God chose her to be the Mother of Jesus and because she faithfully obeyed His will.

The image of the wedding feast can also remind us of the final union between Christ and His Church when God’s plan of salvation is brought to completion.

Christ Has Conquered Death

In 1 Corinthians 15:20–26, Saint Paul tells us that Christ has risen from the dead. His Resurrection is the beginning and promise of our own resurrection.

Death entered the world through Adam, but eternal life comes through Jesus Christ. Jesus died for our sins and conquered death so that we might have eternal life.

We are called to repent, believe in Christ and remain united to Him. We cannot earn heaven by our own strength. Salvation is a gift from God, given through His grace and mercy. We must respond to that grace through faith, repentance, love and obedience.

Mary’s Assumption is a special sharing in her Son’s victory over death. At the end of her earthly life, she was taken body and soul into heavenly glory.

The Catechism teaches:

“The Immaculate Virgin…was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory.”

Mary’s Assumption gives us hope that death is not the end. If we remain united to Christ, we also hope to share in the resurrection of the body and eternal life with God.

The Almighty Has Done Great Things

In Luke 1:39–56, Mary visits her relative Elizabeth while carrying Jesus in her womb. Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit and recognises that Mary is the mother of her Lord.

Mary responds with the Magnificat:

“The Almighty has done great things for me.”

Mary does not take the glory for herself. She praises God and recognises that everything comes from Him. Her life teaches us to be humble, grateful and willing to serve others.

Like Mary, we should remember the great things God has done for us. We should not be afraid to share how He has helped, forgiven and guided us. Our testimony may encourage someone else to trust in Him.

A Sign of Hope for Us

The Assumption is not only about what God did for Mary. It also shows us the future that God has prepared for His faithful people.

Jesus has defeated Satan, sin and death. Although Satan continues to tempt and accuse us, he does not have the final victory. When we fall into sin, we should repent and return to God instead of believing that we are beyond His mercy.

Mary shows us how to trust God, receive His grace with humility and proclaim His goodness. Her Assumption reminds us to keep our eyes fixed on heaven and to remain faithful to Christ.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for conquering sin, Satan and death. When we fall, give us the courage to repent and return to You. Help us to imitate Mary’s faith, humility and obedience. May her Assumption strengthen our hope in the resurrection and eternal life with You. Amen.
